HOST UK promotes international friendship and understanding by arranging for international students studying in the UK to spend a day, weekend or Christmas in a British home with volunteer hosts.
Host Party in Cornwall, 26 April 2014
Sixty hosts attended a party at which the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall presented regional organiser Margaret Stevens with the British Empire Medal ‘for services to international students in the UK’.
Colonel Edward Bolitho also congratulated hosts Margaret Hindle and Toni Olsson, who have both given hospitality to students for 40 years.
Susie was there to represent HOST, and there were international students whose visits coincided with the event, from China, Korea, Japan, Yemen, and the USA. Dr Milena Kremakova, who was introduced to Toni Olsson as a student in 2006 and is now teaching at Warwick University, went down to Cornwall specially to be there.
During the week before the party, Margaret contacted more than 50 former guests (some from as many as 8 years ago), asking them for a photograph of themselves to put on cards for their hosts. Almost all of them responded, 'Which', said Margaret: ‘is just what makes HOST so worthwhile!’
