After being in London for 15 months I was introduced to the HOST programme. It would give me one of the most memorable experiences of my time in Britain. It was a chance to experience life in typical English home. I was invited to Somerset, which was so different from cosmopolitan London.

My hosts lived in a small village, called Bicknoller. They were warm, generous and they made me feel apart the family, even the dog was welcoming. I felt at home immediately! It was more than a chance to get away from the city, I met a fellow international student as well as meet my host neighbours who gave us insight on several aspects of British life. They also provided a quick and interesting look at history as both had travelled widely / extensively.

We explored the mountain range, fed the sheep and the duck, walked the dog, all packed in an absolutely wonderful weekend. It offered more than just a trip to the countryside we exchanged cultures, customs, we even tried to learn Chinese from my fellow guest. It was simply a remarkable weekend. They made learning fun, I discovered simple things such as why Britons drive on the left side of the road, unlike most of Europe. I was also informed that the legendary Sir Vivian Richards played county cricket for Somerset just a few minutes away - quite staggering!

It is quite simply a MUST for all international students, you’ll see life in Britain that you would never obtain from lectures or the campus. I only have two regrets, that my trip was so short and I found out about the programme so late.

My opinion of Britons have been remarkable improved since my trip. I’ve learnt that London is by no means Britain, and it is simply not fair to judge Britons based on life in London, as many experiences and situations could be attributed to big city living. This HOST visit has opened my eyes to life in Britain, not just the Cosmopolitan glamour of its capital city.
